My reaction to Down and Out in Disney Land

When I started reading this story, I found myself constantly questioning what the hell was going on at first. What does the narrator mean by saying that his girlfriend is fifteen precent his age? Would that mean that he's a hundred and she's 15? or maybe he's even older? Things were pretty weird, but hey, they're in Disneyland, so that's pretty cool I guess. We learn from the narrator that the girl has spent nearly her whole life growing up in Disney, which isn't too out of the ordinary. She likes to check the rides out with her friends when they're all closed. Sounds pretty fun. The characters are talking about some weird stuff that I don't really understand.

Then they bust out the crack.

What? To be honest, I really wasn't expecting that. What's a hundred year old man doing smoking crack with his young girlfriend?

And then they kill the narrator. They seem pretty casual about it. So does the narrator too. WhaT?

It doesn't take long for us to learn the truth of the situation, especially after the narrator is shot and killed. In fact, this story takes place in a future society where minds can be "backed up" so that death is not final. The narrator explains his "first death" and the ones which proceeded in detail.

But, yeah. I was pretty caught off guard by the twist.

The bond between me and this story is deep. I value my connection to life and its ethos, so to consider a world where life means nothing as long as you have a backup is strange. How does that society work? Are there any wars? What about crime? Living life without fear of death will change a lot of things.

If I were to adapt this to a different medium like, lets say, video games, I'd put a lot more emphasis on what it's actually like to die and be brought back to life. What's the visual experience like, if there is any? How does it sound? Is it wet? Dry?

The crack part might be weird. Would it be like a press A to smoke crack situation, or would it play out like a cutscene? I'd likely make it so that the player must commit to every action so that they feel more of an attachment to the narrator they play as, so that when he dies, they feel it as much as possible.
